Day 14: Mormugao, Goa

A visit to the Old Churches of Goa an hour's drive from
Mormugao, the chief port of the state of Goa.

Saturday 1st March 2025
We awoke to find ourselves docked in Mormugao. It was another beautiful day and there were signs that another warm welcome was being being prepared for us.

Bruce decided to have a quiet morning by staying on the ship in Mormugao. Geoff went on the tour, but returned to the ship for lunch instead of visiting the spice farm. This was his route.

Vadeshwar Mahadev Temple, Old Goa.

Once at the churches, the remainder of the morning was devoted to a guided walking tour, beginning at the Basílica do Bom Jesus.

The next point of interest was the Church and Convent of St. Francis of Assisi on the left (which we didn't visit) and Sé Catedral de Santa Catarina, known as Se Cathedral on the right (which we did visit).

Se Cathedral had two towers until 1776, when one collapsed and was never rebuilt.

Despite being on the programme and close to the other churches, we did not visit St. Cajetan Church. These photos were sourced from elsewhere.

Back on the coach, it was time to drive back to the port.

Crossing the New Zuari Bridge, which links north and south Goa.

Meanwhile, Bruce had enjoyed his quiet morning on the ship. After all the passengers had left, the entertainers did the same and the port became almost deserted.

With everybody back on board by 3:30pm, we departed at 4:00pm. No bands or people waving goodbye from here, however!

As our ship turned around and headed towards open sea, we noticed that the Port of Mormugao looked bigger than we had been able to see from where we were docked.

As the pilot disembarked, we began the 250 nautical miles voyage from here to Mumbai, our final port of call.

The penultimate night on board is traditionally a night when the captain hosts a cocktail party and the chef serves a gala dinner. Some people even dress very smartly for the event. Our lovely team definitely did that. Sue, Wendy, Neil and Caroline all looked suitably attired for the occasion.

...and also proved that they know how to have a bit of fun!
