Pula

Monday 25th September 2023
The last full day of the holiday. Our ship was already in its final position and we had the whole day to explore the historical city of Pula, with a guided walking tour in the morning and the afternoon free for whatever we wanted to do. It was a very warm day. The clouds appeared slightly menacing, but soon dispersed.

After meeting our local guide, it was a very short walk to the biggest highlight of what Pula has to offer - its amazing amphitheatre.

The hour and a half that we spent in the amphitheatre seemed to pass quickly because there was so much to take in and our guide had lots of stories to tell us!

The Twin Gates were once part of the city walls. Today they lead to the Archaeological Museum and the Castle.

We continued walking with the guide until we had listened to her for long enough! We continued on our own.

It seems that James Joyce liked Pula too!

He was certainly well remembered in Trieste,
which isn't that far from here.

Forum Square, with the Temple of Augustus on the left and the Communal Palace in the centre.

Signs of an old railway turntable close to our ship.

Back to the ship...

...and time for pre-lunch drinks on the top deck.

After lunch we set off once more on foot to explore some more of the city.

We stopped at one of the dozens of ice cream shops!

We found the Franciscan church and monastery that a fellow traveller had recommended we visit.

We loved the tranquility of the place.

The courtyard tortoises were cute.

We found ourselves revisiting some of the places we'd seen this morning as we walked in the opposite direction.

The rather imposing Bank of Italy building.

Representing three different styles and periods of architecture next to one another.

As we began to tire and were walking back towards the ship, we met a few of our fellow travellers who were going in search of a brewery. Geoff decided to join them. They didn't find one, but they did stop for a drink at this place, which served craft beer. (Bruce wasn't interested so he returned to the ship.)

Geoff enjoyed his extended afternoon. He also explored some of the passages under the castle...

...and got some good views from above ground.

The Captain's farewell drinks and dinner party. A chance to thank the crew...

and our very hard-working cruise director, Carolyn.

It had been a lovely day and the beautiful nighttime scenes from the ship were a perfect end to it.
