Rab to Mali Losinj

Wednesday 20th September 2023
Another breakfast time departure. There were beautiful views of Rab as we left and headed towards Mali Losinj.

The last few miles of the route were especially interesting, because Mali Losinj is situated at the head of quite a narrow channel. There were what appeared to be shortcuts that we might have taken, but clearly our captain knew that the slightly longer route was the only safe one.

A few random photos of the ship, taken as we sailed.

Another opportunity to pause and set down some ropes to demarcate a safe area for swimming.

Sailing on, we passed a resort called Trasorka, which has glamping tents as well as fixed accommodation. We wondered whether it was a naturist resort because there are loads of these and they are something for which Croatia is famous.

This is the point where we turned right into the channel leading to Mali Losinj.

We were free to explore by ourselves, which we were happy to do.

We were given one very strong recommendation from our cruise director (which sounded more like a command!) to visit the Museum of Apoxyomenos. The museum is devoted to the display of one item, the Croatian Apoxyomenos, which is an Ancient Greek statue cast in bronze in the 2nd or 1st century BC. It was discovered in 1996 on the bottom of the sea nearby - more information here and in the daily programme above.

It is an unusual mueum. The staircase is one example of that!

It is possible to enter the room where the exhibit is displayed, but a rather stern looking guard is on hand to ensure that you don't take any photos or attempt to touch it. It is therefore only possible to take pictures from outside the room, looking through one of two portholes. The whole experience was weird, but we thought the exhibit itself was wonderful.

Views of our ship from the museum.

Afterwards we went for a walk to explore the town a bit more and hopefully find the church on the hill. Unfortunately we didn't have a map with us and got a bit lost, climbing up a very steep hill to the wrong part of town in the heat. We did find this church, however.

Bruce needed some gelato to cool off!

Later Geoff went off on his own, armed with a map this time, and found the church on the hill.

Our friend Angela was on the preceding cruise and gave us a recommendation for this restaurant for an evening meal. The food was excellent and the staff were lovely. Thank you Angela!

Once again, we remained docked in the port overnight, so there was no rush to get back after our lovely meal.
