Day 4: Iguazu from the Brazilian side

A day trip into Brazil to see the falls from a different perspective.

Monday 4th March 2024

After yesterday's extreme temperatures, a rainstorm overnight had cooled things off and we felt a lot more comfortable. Today we would be crossing the border into Brazil to see the other side of the falls, but coming back to the Argentinian side afterwards.

Our hotel really was in the middle of some quite dense jungle. This was the view from our room.

A short drive from the hotel and we arrived at the border. Our local guide, Carolina, collected our passports and took them to the Argentinian officers for processing. It wasn't long before she came back with them and we were through.

Half way across this bridge, we left Argentina (left) and entered Brazil (right). The land that can be seen in the distance, in the centre of the picture, is part of Paraguay. Tomorrow, we would get closer to the tri-border.

On the other side of the bridge, we approached the Brazilian immigration/customs point. This time, we all had to get off the bus and get our passports stamped indivually, so it took slightly longer.

Not far beyond the border checkpoint, we arrived at the entrance to the Iguazu National Park. Once again, ticket controls meant that we had to enter one by one with our tickets, after which we could rejoin the coach for the drive to the falls.

The map is not to scale. It is quite a long drive from the entrance of the park, to where we were dropped off at Parada Trilha das Cataratas (right outside the lovely Belmond Hotel das Cataratas) From there we were led on a walking tour with plenty of opportunities to stop and be amazed by the falls. At the end of the walk, we took a lift up the tower and made our way to the restaurant near Estação Espaço Porto Canoas, where we had a very nice buffet lunch before getting back on the coach for our return journey.

We decided that if we ever come back here, this is where we'd like to stay!

We could see the White Tower in the distance.

After seeing the falls so close up and feeling exhilirated by the noise and the spray, we took the lift up the observation tower.

From the top, the views were even more dramatic!

Geoff managed to get a photo of a bird which was seemingly defying death by flying behind the curtain of water.

From the observation deck, which was on the same level that our coach had moved to after dropping us off, it was only a short stroll to the restaurant where we would be having lunch.

Fortunately, the plans today were better constructed than yesterday and we arrived just after the restaurant opened.

We enjoyed lunch, which was a buffet. Geoff particularly enjoyed the beer.

After lunch we drove back across the border into Argentina and returned to our hotel.

Before dinner, we enjoyed a gin & tonic in the lounge.

Dinner itself was, once again, very good. While we were in the dining room, there was a power failure lasting about fifteen minutes. Fortunately, we had finished our main course and were in the middle of our dessert. The staff produced candles and managed the situation well.
