Visits to Baelo Claudia & Tarifa
from the port of Algeciras

Wednesday 17th November 2021

We were only due to arrive in the port of Algeciras at around lunchtime. This meant that we got to sail through the Straits of Gibraltar during the morning, affording good views of the coasts of both Spain and Morocco.

After arriving, we were happy to take the afternoon group excursion to the well preserved Roman archaeological site of Baelo Claudia, followed by a visit to the charming old seaside town of Tarifa.

Being so close to Morocco, Bruce's phone picked up a signal from there. Fortunately he had a cap set on his data usage because within one minute the cap of twenty pounds had been reached. A nice little earner for the Moroccan telecoms network. We wondered how many others had been victims of sail-by muggings!

As we approached Algeciras, the unmistakeable shape of the rock of Gibraltar loomed large on the horizon. Our visit there was something to look forward to tomorrow.

Algeciras is one of the largest ports in Europe. This was news to Bruce as he had never heard of it!

We docked while we were having lunch, after which we set off on a lovely, scenic coastal drive to the archaeological site of Baelo Claudia.

The site has a small, but impressive museum.

Leaving the site, we drove the short distance to Tarifa, passing many beaches that are popular with windsurfers because of the strong winds in the area.

Tarifa itself is charming. We didn't have much time there, but we did get a flavour of the place.

Back on board, all drinks were on the house tonight!

It had been another sunny, warm and interesting day. Over dinner we sailed and before we knew it we were docked again in Gibraltar, situated just across the bay from Algeciras.
