Vienna: 31st May 2003

The last full day of our holiday along the Danube and we were free to explore Vienna. We left the ship and passed a very distinctive Germanic church with tile-clad spires.
We got on the U-Bahn again and made our way to the town centre, and eventually to the Rathaus, or Town Hall - very Gothic.

And then on past the Votivkirke, built as a promise after plague left Vienna.

It was now approaching elevenses, and to fulfil another promise, we went to Cafe Sacher and had coffee and Sachertorte. And very good it was, too!

Our next stop was the Seccessionist building - a marvellous Art Deco building

We could, if we wanted, have gone on an organised tour to the Schonbrunn palace. But we decided that it was now far too hot to traipse round a palace and especially the extensive grounds. We would return to Vienna one day, we agreed, and so decided to seize another opportunity: there was a secessionist church in the suburbs which was only open 14:00 to 16:00 on Saturdays. It being Saturday afternoon, we decided to try and find it. The Tourist Information place was very helpful and we caught the bus into the West of Vienna. The church was, we discovered, in the grounds of a mental asylum...

It was, of course, covered in scaffolding and under extensive repair. Nevertheless, the huge crowds indicated that the inside was something special, and it was.

Then back to the ship to tell everyone about our adventures. It was the last night so we ate with those whose company we had most enjoyed, Doug , Barbara, Geoff and Bridget.
