October 2021: South Africa

Seventeen months after my last visit to South Africa, I was finally able to return. When I last left SA at the end of March 2020, the world was going into lockdown. It has only just become possible for UK visitors to return to South Africa without the need to quarantine for ten days in a hotel upon returning to the UK. I therefore seized the chance and went to see my family. I am so glad that I was able to do so.

Departure from Heathrow Terminal Five

Masks required for the entire flight

Cameron's birthday

I got my booster vaccination (six months after my second jab back home) at a clinic while I was there.

Mom's small but lovely garden at Country Life.

The retirement estate is very large. It was good to get some exercise daily, by walking around the perimeter.

A visit to the Cleland's home for supper.

My first meeting with my great-nephew, Alonzo. He is such a good little boy.

Jackie kept Cataleya occupied during our visit to Kathleen and Damian's home.

Kathleen, with my great-niece Catalaya and great-nephew Alonzo.

Damian teaching Catalaya the basics of football.

Another family gathering at Jackie's soon-to-be-sold home.

I insisted on posing with five of my eight great-nephews and nieces.

Mom, with her new designer head-gear to help her see to knit.

Linda, at home with Chloe, her constant companion.

Great-nephew Jayden, taken whilst visiting Des, Jenny, Donna and Justin.

My last day. It was nice to see so many members of the family coming to say goodbye.

Kelly and Tatum enjoyed the quiche!

Finally, a few clips incorporated into a short video.

It felt like such a privilege to even be able to visit my family again, something which I had taken for granted over previous years. I hope that I will be able to return again without the fear of the Covid pandemic being ever-present in everybody's thoughts.
