Shetland Islands: A scenic drive
from Lerwick to Jarlshof

Wednesday 22nd July 2015

Despite leaving Kirkwall quite late last night, the relatively short distance (105 nautical miles) to Lerwick meant that there was plenty of time for us to arrive by 8.00am, as scheduled.

It had been a very calm night, well, we think it was calm because we both slept very well after the Captain's welcome dinner!

Approaching Lerwick, the main port of the Shetland Islands.

We were intrigued to see what looked like two temporary structures, side by side, floating in the harbour. Later we were told that they were floating hotels for workers building the new Shetland gas plant.
We docked at "Holmsgarth 5" instead of the more centrally located Victoria Pier, which was apparently unavailable due to "gas plant" operations. Not sure about the accuracy of that, but it didn't matter too much. We weren't going to have time to explore the town, because we were only here for a short time and we had chosen to do the excursion to Jarlshof, in preference to the guided tour of the town.

We were in the "other group". It was a pity we couldn't have done both tours, but time didn't permit.

This is the route we took. Travelling south from Lerwick towards Sumburgh and Jarlshof, we took a detour off the main road onto the B9122, from where we got some stunning views of the western coast. On the way back we kept to the main road, from where the views of the eastern coast were equally good.

We did manage to get some photos of Lerwick from the coach, as we drove through it.

A community centre (I think).

The Broch of Clickimin, near Lerwick.

Travelling south, we took a detour for part of the way and got these wonderful views of the island's west coast.

The road to Jarlshof crosses the runway at Sumburgh airport.

Sumburgh is Shetland's main airport, with flights to mainland Scotland and to Bergen.

Just on the other side of the airport is a hotel and the entrance to Jarlshof.

A helicopter was about to take off from the hotel grounds.

Whilst everybody else moved on into the Jarlshof site, Bruce held back so he could take this video!

After exploring the site itself, we went into the visitor centre.

The return trip took us back to the airport and once again across the runway.

We took the main road back to Lerwick and got more excellent views, this time of the island's east coast.

We were taken straight back to the ship, arriving approximately thirty minutes before we were due to sail.

A typical afternoon tea!

Neil (appropriate dressed in his kilt) toasted us as we left Scottish waters.

After dinner, we were treated to an impromptu demonstration of the art of serviette folding.
Next stop, Rosendal, Norway.
