Miltenberg
& Freudenberg

Well, G&B went off the bakery today to make pretzels (whatever next?!), but I didn't fancy that at all. In my experience, there is always alcohol at monasteries, so that's where I went, along with some of the other more discerning travellers on this ship. As usual, I was right! They make wine and beer there and we all had a great time. It's funny, but lots of people seem to recognise me now. In fact, I have invited many of the Australians on the trip to come and visit and stay with us at home. Then at lunchtime we rejoined G&B at a beer cellar in the next town. It was another real highlight for me, because there was more beer, live entertainment, including yodelling (I thought that only happened in Switzerland) and dancing, plus men wearing lederhosen. For some reason, G&B disappeared just before the entertainment started, which was very disappointing, because they missed one of the best experiences. I was a star! I yodelled the "lonely goatherd" at the top of my voice and everybody cheered. Although they never say anything at home, I know full well that they love my singing and yodelling. Come to think of it, they never seem to be around when I am giving it my all.

Thursday 1st May 2014

The plan for today was for us to disembark in Wertheim at 9:30 a.m. and board coaches for our excursion. The ship was then to continue on to Freudenberg, where we would rejoin it after having lunch ashore.

There was no time to explore Wertheim, where we disembarked. It was a pity, because looking at the guide books, it is quite an interesting town located on a tapering spit of land at the confluence of the Tauber and Main rivers and has an interesting castle and quaint narrow lanes. Oh well, somewhere to come back to one day.

We were put straight onto coaches for the drive to Miltenberg.

45 minutes later, we arrived in Miltenberg, but drove through it to the outskirts of the town.
The theme for the day was "village events". We had been asked to choose between a range of activities and numbers for each activity were limited. We chose the bakery option, which was limited to 15 people.

A friendly baker called Michael, assisted by our guide (a.k.a "Sister Anna"), showed us how to make pretzels...

...and then we attempted to make them ourselves...
...with varying degrees of success.
Of course, Geoff's was the best one.
For some reason, Bruce was reluctant to point out his one!
They were then baked.

We each got to eat our own creations and were given a free drink. Mmmm not bad!
After the bakery experience, we had some spare time before lunch, so we were taken into the town of Miltenberg itself.

One thing I can really remember about the town (from our guide) is that Elvis Presley once stopped here briefly... talk about useless trivia! Our guide was a real character and kept us amused with her stories!

Miltenburg has a very long Main Street (Hauptstrasse) running parallel to the River Main. We didn't walk the entire length of it (about a mile), but we did walk some distance along it in either direction fom the market square, with its attractive fountain dating back to 1583, flanked by several half-timbered houses.

After a very pleasant stroll around the town, it was back on the coach for the short drive to Freudenberg, where we rejoined all the other passengers, who told us about their morning adventures. The lunch wasn't bad, but alarms started to ring for us when it was announced that there would be yodelling during dessert to entertain us. We looked at each other and decided to get out while the going was good! Unfortunately, that meant missing dessert.
Our early departure from the restaurant gave us a little time to get our bearings. It was only a short walk to the river and as we stood there, we watched as our ship came gliding in.
By 2.00pm everybody else was back on board and we sailed.

That afternoon, there was a glass blowing demonstration.

Some of the bridges were sooo low!
