We flew from Perth to Uluru (formally Ayer's Rock) in a BAe146.

We stayed at the Ayer’s Rock Resort, a carefully landscaped group of hotels in the desert on the edge of the Uluru - Kata Tjuka National Park. They cater for all, from backpackers in tents to 5*. Our hotel was excellent and air-conditioned, thank goodness, as the average temperature was 35 degrees, although it was a very dry heat and not uncomfortable.
The next day, we did the "see Ayer’s Rock at dawn" bit, getting up at 5 a.m. to do so. It was worth the effort, and it is true, it does change colour dramatically.
We then had a choice of climbing the Rock, or walking around it. To the aborigines, the rock is sacred, so to climb it would be like climbing over St Paul's cathedral. Nevertheless, climbing is not forbidden, as the aborigines feel that one must have freedom of action guided by concience. We decided to walk aound the Rock. We were shown some fascinating sights by a local Aborigine.

After our walk, he showed us how to make resin and throw a spear (should the need arise).
